Nick works with the Practice Management Team and our barristers at Wilberforce to deliver a high level of service to all our clients. He sits on the Management Board and is responsible for instigating and delivering agreed business strategies. Paul Newman KC

Practice overview

Paul has a litigation and advisory practice concentrating on financial and private client disputes, most notably pensions, financial services and trusts. A substantial proportion of Paulā€™s practice also involves advising on and acting in liability and negligence disputes involving professionals.

As well as representing some of the highest profile pension schemes in the UK and several major life insurers, Paul has acted for the Pensions Regulator, the PPF and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. He has been heavily involved in advising on, and appearing in cases relating to, various provisions of the Pensions Act 2004 and he also has extensive experience of advising and litigating on various public sector and industry-wide pension schemes.

An increasing amount of Paulā€™s work relates to Self-Invested Personal Pension Schemes (or SIPPs). Paul acts for investors, providers and trustees in respect of claims for mis-selling of SIPPs and mis-investments within SIPPS.

The regulation of the auto-enrolment regime has taken up an increasing amount of Paulā€™s work more recently, with Paul representing several organisations involved in the gig economy who are in discussions or disputes with the Pensions Regulator about their auto-enrolment obligations.

A substantial proportion of Paulā€™s work has involved dealing with errors in pension schemes, and he has used this experience to produce a book, A Practitionerā€™s Guide to Correcting Mistakes in Pension Schemes, which was published by Bloomsbury Professional in March 2022. For this, Paul was awarded the prestigious Wallace Medal by the Association of Pension Lawyers.

Paul is the founder and general editor of www.pensionsbarrister.com, a website featuring articles from pensions barristers and podcast interviews with prominent pensions practitioners.

Paul has an interest in legal history and is a member of the Selden Society. In his spare time, he is researching for a part-time PhD at the London School of Economics on the topic of law reporting in the Georgian era, for which he has been awarded a London Arts & Humanities Partnership Research Studentship.

Thomas Grant KC

Practice overview

Thomas practises mainly in the Chancery Division and Commercial Court, as well as in the BVI and Cayman Islands, and has particular experience in heavy multi-party disputes. Regarded as one of the leading advocates at the commercial chancery Bar Thomas was awarded Chancery Silk of the Year 2021 by Chambers and Partners. He spends a good part of his professional life in the courtroom and has appeared in a very large number of reported decisions (over the last four years alone Thomas has appeared in over 40 reported cases). Thomas also has a substantial international arbitration practice. In the last few years Thomas has been instructed in some of the most high-profile commercial and fraud claims in the English courts.

He is recommended for civil fraud, commercial chancery (band 1), real estate litigation and professional negligence in Chambers UK Bar 2024, and for commercial dispute resolution in Chambers Global (band 1). He is also recommended for civil fraud (Tier 1), commercial litigation, banking and finance, property litigation, professional negligence, and company in The Legal 500 UK 2024. The Legal 500 2024 said that “Put quite simply, he is the pinnacle of the London Bar”Ā (The Legal 500, 2024).

Thomas has a particular interest in fraud claims and is well known for his expertise in obtaining and defending freezing and related interim orders, including Norwich Pharmacal orders. He is also well known for his experience in contempt applications arising out of fraud claims, having appeared in some of the most significant cases in this area over the last 10 years. He is also instructed to provide chancery and company law input in very high-value matrimonial disputes and has appeared on a number of occasions in leading cases in the Family Division.

He is the author and editor of many leading textbooks, including Civil Fraud: Law, Practice and Procedure, details of which can be found under ā€˜Publicationsā€™. Since its publication in 2018Ā Civil Fraud has been cited with approval over 35 times in the English and overseas courts, making it perhaps the most cited textbook of the last 5 years.

His advocacy has been commended by the Court of Appeal as ā€œlucid and compellingā€ (Zinda v BOS) and as ā€œengaging and very ableā€ (Platform Home Loans v BOS).

Samuel Cathro

Practice overview

Sam joined Chambers as a tenant in September 2022. He regularly appears in both the High Court and the County Court on his own account, and also enjoys working as part of a team.

Before joining Wilberforce, Sam practised in New Zealand as a barrister, and as a solicitor in one of New Zealandā€™s leading litigation firms. He had a broad practice and frequently acted on large cases involving difficult contractual and equitable issues. In one such case Sam acted for PwC as liquidator of Ross Asset Management, New Zealandā€™s largest Ponzi scheme ā€“ a matter which raised novel questions about the intersection between equitable and insolvency principles.

Sam has lectured in contract law and tutored the property law (and equity) module at the University of Otago, and obtained a first-class LLM from Cambridge University. He is currently co-authoring chapters in Thomas on PowersĀ with Robert Ham KC.

Sam’s practice spans all of Chambersā€™ key areas, including trusts, commercial disputes, property, and insolvency.

James Goodwin

Practice overview

James is a commercial and chancery specialist who is ranked in The Legal 500 and in Chambers & Partners. In the UK, James has a broad practice with particular expertise in contentious trusts, commercial disputes and civil fraud work.
