Jules Sher KC

Jules Sher KC is an international arbitrator, whose expertise spans business and commercial law. He is a member of the SIAC Arbitrators Panel.

Jules was appointed as an advisor to the Singapore government in the Malaysia v Singapore arbitration in The Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague (2015). Since then, he has continued to advise the government, more recently on a separate matter in 2017.

In addition to arbitration experience his recent international experience also includes sitting as a judge in the Commercial Court of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in the British Virgin Islands, where Jules was concerned with a wide range of corporate and international issues including insolvency, winding up, unfair prejudice and other related issues.

In the UK, Jules is currently heavily engaged as the only fiduciary member of a committee appointed by the High Court in England, in relation to a high profile dispute. This is a position which is akin to that of an arbitrator and recognises his reputation and authority to make awards / decisions.

In 2018, Jules was reappointed by Tate to its Ethics Committee, which he has been a part of since 2007. His advice to Tate has involved and continues to involve a considerable amount of application in resolving complex and contentious issues.

Notable cases outside the UK include: Singapore (Singtel and the Info-communications Development Authority and the Jumabhoy litigation); Cayman Islands (Re Anders Jahre, AG v Even Wahr-Hansen); Hong Kong (Union (V-Tex) Shirt Factory v Union V-Tex Realty); Bahamas (Rawson Trust Co Ltd v Perlman).

In the UK he acted in the litigation by Equitable Life Assurance Society against its former Board of Directors.  He advised the Society of Lloyd’s on the reconstruction of the Lloyd’s market and represented that Society in the House of Lords in its litigation against the Names.  He represented the hedge fund community in litigation against the administrators of Lehman Brothers after the collapse of that investment bank. He has appeared in many leading cases in diverse fields: local government finance (Credit Suisse v Allerdale; South Tyneside v Svenska); gas exploration (British Gas v Phillips Petroleum; Amoco v Amerada Hess; Neste v Shell); pensions (Imperial Tobacco; LRT and Electricity Supply); trusts (Public Trustee v Cooper); mortgage securities (Barclays v Harris; NatWest v Gill; UCB Homeloans v Moore; Barclays v Coleman).

Jules is also a qualified mediator and has mediated many disputes in the commercial field.
